Second Class Rank Requirements

Picture

Overview

This page will document the requirements for Second-Class Rank.  Items that are already signed off in my Scout Book Handbook will not be documented here.  I will use this page to capture items that need additional documentation.

Section 1b

Explain the principles of Leave No Trace and tell how you practiced them on a campout or outing. This outing must be different from the one used for Tenderfoot requirement 1c.

Section 1c

On one of these campouts, select a location for your patrol site and recommend it to your patrol leader, senior patrol leader, or troop guide. Explain what factors you should consider when choosing a patrol site and where to pitch a tent.

Section 2e

On one campout, plan and cook one hot breakfast or lunch, selecting foods from MyPlate or the current USDA nutritional model. Explain the importance of good nutrition. Demonstrate how to transport, store, and prepare the foods you selected.

Section 5a

Tell what precautions must be taken for a safe swim.
According to the BSA Aquatic Safety Guidelines, the following should be considered for safe swimming:

Qualified Supervision - a mature and conscientious adult should be monitoring

Safe Area - safe depth, temperature, and free from dangerous animals or structures

Lookout - monitor people and conditions for harmful situations and inform an adult if there is a problem

Buddy System - find a friend to be a buddy and keep an eye out for each other.  Let your buddy know when you are leaving an area and go together.  If there is an issue with my buddy, let an adult know immediately.

Discipline - Know, understand, and respect the rules of the swimming area.  Following the rules for the swimming area can help to provide a safe and fun environment.

Section 5d

Explain why swimming rescues should not be attempted when a reaching or throwing rescue is possible. Explain why and how a rescue swimmer should avoid contact with the victim.
You should not attempt to save a drowning victim by reaching when a throwing rescue is possible because the swimmer in danger can harm or drown the rescuer.  Someone that is drowning is in a state of fight or flight and/or panic.   In this state, the victim may unintentionally grab onto someone nearby and push them under water to save themself.

If possible, toss a lifesaver or jacket out to the person in distress.  The drowning person can use the flotation to stop going under water.  Once the person is less panicked, you can pull them in with a rope to get them to safety.

Section 7a

After completing Tenderfoot requirement 6c, be physically active at least 30 minutes each day for five days a week for four weeks. Keep track of your activities.

Section 7b

Share your challenges and successes in completing Second Class requirement 7a. Set a goal for continuing to include physical activity as part of your daily life and develop a plan for doing so.
Some challenges I found trying to stay active each day include forgetting to be active, bad weather outside, and dealing with being sick.

I was able to be successful in being active during the days that I had PE at school.  Since I am required to do PE, it is much easier to remember to do it.

I plan to remain active in after-school sports activities.  I will participate in soccer, baseball, and tennis to remain active.

Section 8a 🇺🇸

Participate in a flag ceremony for your school, religious institution, chartered organization, community, or Scouting activity.
I participated in the flag ceremony at the Troop 56 Court of Honor on Feb 14, 2022

Section 8b 🇺🇸

Explain what respect is due the flag of the United States.
The flag of the United States deserve respect in the following ways
* Standing up for the pledge of allegiance
* Put you hand on your heart or Boy Scout salute for the allegiance
* Never let the flag touch the ground
* If the flag is damaged, the flag should be retired
* A flag needs to be taken down when it is dark unless it has lights to illuminate it
* The American flag should be flown higher than any other flag near it

Section 8c

With your parents or guardian, decide on an amount of money that you would like to earn, based on the cost of a specific item you would like to purchase. Develop a written plan to earn the amount agreed upon and follow that plan; it is acceptable to make changes to your plan along the way. Discuss any changes made to your original plan and whether you met your goal.
I wanted to purchase an arcade cabinet with classic Namco games.  This is an expensive game cabinet that costs $450.  I wanted this for my birthday, but it was too expensive for a gift.

My plan was to use any money that I got for my birthday, along with money that I had already saved, and to do chores for the remaining amount needed.

For my birthday, I received $200 from my family and friends.  I had about $200 saved up from other activities.  For the remaining $50, I would do chores around the house for 3 weeks.

Once I saved the money I needed for the game, we had to find the best price.  Unfortunately, I wanted to buy this cabinet around Christmas time, and it was very hard to find it in stock.  My dad and I would check the availability of the game periodically online and in stores.  We happened to find the game in stock at Academy Sports one day.  We bought the game with the money I saved.  The total cost was $493 after tax.  My dad gave me the additional $40 I needed, and I paid him back in chores.

I now have the arcade cabinet in my room and I love it.

Section 8d

At a minimum of three locations, compare the cost of the item for which you are saving to determine the best place to purchase it. After completing Second Class requirement 8c, decide if you will use the amount that you earned as originally intended, save all or part of it, or use it for another purpose.
Mentioned above, the arcade cabinet was very hard to find.  We looked for the game at Wal-Mart, Academy Sports, Best Buy, and Arcade 1up Website.

Overall, all stores had the same price, so it really came down to finding it in stock.  Luckily, we found it at Academy Sports one day, and we jumped right on to purchase it.  I did use all of my funds I had saved for the purchase.

Section 10

Demonstrate Scout spirit by living the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Tell how you have done your duty to God and how you have lived four different points of the Scout Law (not to include those used for Tenderfoot requirement 9) in your everyday life.
Friendly - I like to talk to a lot of different people.  I will go out of my way to make new friends when I see someone I don't know.

Clean - I like to be a highly organized person, I like to keep my room tidy, and I like to make sure I take a shower daily to keep myself clean

Courageous - I am not afraid to go out into the world to try new things.  I do not shy away from difficulties.

Obedient - I follow directions at school, at home, and at church.  I pay close attention to what my parents tell me to do, and I do what is expected
