Requirement 3a: School Board Meeting

Attend a meeting of your city, town, or county council or school board; OR attend a municipal, county, or state court session.
I picked the Collierville School Board meeting that was held on 10/25/2022 as my public meeting to review

Requirement 3b: School Board Meeting Discussion

Choose one of the issues discussed at the meeting where a difference of opinions was expressed, and explain to your counselor why you agree with one opinion more than you do another one
At around 40 minutes, there was a motion to discuss the policy for the school board to continue to have the right to name school facilities and roads after school people.  Currently, only the school board can make recommendations to name facilities after people.

One board member expressed concern that only the 5 board members can make the decision.  She felt that the entire community should take part in the naming of schools.

Another member said that it made sense that the decisions would be with the board only.  He also stated that this is the current policy and there was no need to change it.

I agree with the first person's argument rather than the second person's argument because it would be better for the entire community of Collierville to decide who should be represented, for all the help they've done, by renaming a school faciality after them. It's always nice to show some one's hard work over the years by giving them a legacy that can be shown to the entire school/community. I feel like it would be better if the community would be able to also decide if a person should be represented for something as serious as this.

The vote to maintain the board's rights to name facilities was upheld 3 to 2.

Requirement 7: Charitable Organization in the Community

Identify three charitable organizations outside of Scouting that interest you and bring people in your community together to work for the good of your community.
Project Transformation, Habitat for Humanity, Room in the Inn
B) Pick ONE of the organizations you chose for requirement 7a. Using a variety of resources (including newspapers, fliers and other literature, the Internet, volunteers, and employees of the organization), find out more about this organization.

I will pick the Project Transformation organization.  Project Transformation is a Methodist Church ministry to improve literacy and social-emotional learning.

College-age young adults invest in the lives of children while cultivating intentional community, exploring their vocation, and developing as servant leaders.
Children improve their literacy, social-emotional, and spiritual development through participating in high-quality, out-of-school time programs led by young adults.
Churches host our out-of-school time programs, building relationships with their neighbors.
C) With your counselor's and your parent's approval, contact the organization you chose for requirement 7b, and find out what young people can do to help. While working on this merit badge, volunteer at least eight hours of your time for the organization. After your volunteer experience is over, discuss what you have learned with your counselor.
My home church became involved with the Summer 2022 Project Transformation Activities at Centenary United Methodist Church on McLemore Ave in Memphis, TN.  My mom was the coordinator from our Covenant United Methodist Church.  My mom made many announcements at church regarding the involvement needs and I decided to help her with the program.

Our first interaction with the Summer 2022 Project Transformation team was to meet the interns that would be working with the kids at the camp.  The Covenant church provided three meals to the team in the pre-camp training.  I went with my mom and dad to help serve dinner for the group, get to know the interns, and talk about the plans for the week that I would be participating in the reading program.

My next involvement was volunteering to read for the kids for three days (18 hours total).  I went to the church with the kids that were in the camp, and I read to young kids!  The kids would pick the books they were interested in, and I would read it to them.  When we were done, I would ask the kids about the book - what did they like and what was interesting.

It was interesting to get to know the summer interns and learn about their plans for the future.  I also enjoyed reading to young kids!  It was very rewarding, and I hope to participate in Project Transformation in the future.

Requirement 8: Public Presentation About Collierville

Develop a public presentation (such as a video, slide show, speech, digital presentation, or photo exhibit) about important and unique aspects of your community. Include information about the history, cultures, and ethnic groups of your community; its best features and popular places where people gather; and the challenges it faces. Stage your presentation in front of your merit badge counselor or a group, such as your patrol or a class at school.  Develop a public presentation (such as a video, slide show, speech, digital presentation, or photo exhibit) about important and unique aspects of your community.
